McLean is most well known for his 1971 song "American Pie" which hit #1 in the US and #2 in the UK.
"American Pie" was partly inspired by the February 3, 1959 plane crash which killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper. The phrase "The day the music died" in the song is a reference to this event.
